Bike Lanes
Protect our lifestyle and our lives!

FDOT is putting the final touches on its plans for A1A, but only after taking some final considerations from the bicycling community.  After much pressure, Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Abreu said just the other day that he will "get involved" and support District IV Secretary Chesser's decision. Unsure of what "getting involved" means for Secretary Abreu, it is important to ensure that Secretary Abreu follows what simply is the law - full bike lanes and sidewalks where sufficient right-of-way exists. From Pensacola to Jacksonville to Key West, A1A is our road, not just the few with the millions to buy beachfront property. Further, this roadway in Palm Beach County is the #1 death road for cyclists and pedestrians. The homeowners along A1A seem to like it that way, thinking that a safer roadway will bring more of "us" onto "their" road.

Please take just 10 seconds to draft a polite, but firm, e-mail to the FDOT administration and Governor Bush, at the e-mail addresses below, and tell them we need them to support safety and to follow the law which requires such bike lanes.  We are not asking for them to tear down trees and demolish homes for bikes, we are simply asking them to build the bike lanes and sidewalks on the existing public right-of-way along A1A, which the few (but influential) A1A homeowners do not want because, well, it will require the State to pull up the flowers they planted. They are "ok" trading lawns for lives. I don't think you are.

PLEASE TAKE JUST A SECOND TO LET THEM KNOW HOW IMPORTANT BIKE LANES AND SIDEWALKS ALONG A1A ARE TO US AND THE SAFETY OF OUR FAMILIES.
